“When I look back over my life I can see that I always worked hard to avoid conflict.
I suppose it’s because of my personality type. I’m quite introverted and could be classed as an ‘avoider’.
I always seek to smooth over conflict.
This desire to avoid conflict found me not backing down from verbal aggression, but seeking to resolve the situation peacefully without resorting to violence. ‘Winging’ it to de-escalate I guess.
I got better with time and experience, but certainly had times that on reflection I thought “I probably could have handled that differently”. I learned from experience. Working in the security industry has certainly given me plenty of opportunities to practice ‘de-escalation’.
As well as continually studying de-escalation techniques, I absorb all the knowledge I can from other people who have real life experience in this area.
This has given me a desire to help others to hopefully avoid some of what I have had to learn the hard way.
I have found that working with people on how to de-escalate an agitated person has helped many feel more confidence when faced with difficult client / people situations.”
